2017 - Christmas

12/2 & 3, 9 & 10/2017 Santa's Candy Cane Express

posted Nov 16, 2017, 12:10 PM by North Judson-Wayne Township Public Library

It’s a child’s world of wonder where the magic of Christmas, trains, and Santa Claus evokes a warm feeling of nostalgia when your family visits the Hesston Steam Museum the first two weekends in December. Grab some hot cocoa and ride the Candy Cane Express in open or enclosed passenger coaches for a 20 minute scenic ride through the woods and farmlands of the Hesston Steam Museum. Santa waits for your Christmas wish lists in a 1900s era railroad caboose and you are invited to take photos with him at no charge. The caboose’s wood stove warms the winter air as your family prepares to visit with him.
  • Then step into The Depot Store, where you can find lots of great stocking stuffers and gifts for your little engineer - all at 15% off the normal price.
  • Hungry? Doc’s Soda Fountain is an authentic 1930 soda bar where “soda jerks” dish up ice cream treats for your family. Doc’s adds to the vintage experience with festive hand dipped milk shakes, full lunches, and even breakfast from 9 - 11!
  • Free train ride? Give & Receive -  Give a new unwrapped toy to US Marine Corps Toys for Tots and receive a free train ticket (suggested value of toy is $6+). Volunteers of the Hesston Steam Museum are very proud to support this worthy cause.

11/11/2017 to 1/7/2018 A Christmas Story Comes Home

posted Nov 2, 2017, 11:14 AM by North Judson-Wayne Township Public Library

The "A Christmas Story" Comes Home exhibit centers around 6 animatronic window displays from Macy's Department Store in New York featuring different scenes from "A Christmas Story".

There are also a variety of events and activities going on all season long. The holiday classic, "A Christmas Story", was written by Jean Shepherd, Leigh Brown and Bob Clark and was based on Shepherd's 1966 book, "In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash". The book is a compilation of short stories based on Shepherd's experiences growing up in Hammond, Indiana. A number of the short stories appeared in Playboy magazine and originated from his unscripted radio broadcasts in the 1950's, 60's and 70's.

Shepherd narrated the entire movie and also had a cameo in the Department Store scene. The movie was set in the fictional town of Hohman, Indiana which was a disguise for Shepherd's hometown: Hammond. Hohman is one of Hammond's busiest downtown streets.
