Computer Rules

Using the computers at the library is a privilege, not a right. The Library staff has the right to restrict/ban computer usage by persons who cannot abide by the regulations of the library of the specific rules for the use of the computers. Attempts at altering programs or other functions of the computers without authorization will result in permanent denial of access to the network.

Computer time needs to be reserved in advance. It is preferred that you reserve time at least one (1) day in advance; however, reservations can be made up to one week in advance. If you need to work on a last minute project, you must call at least one (1) hour in advance if you want to be guaranteed computer time on any computer that is open. Any terminals not reserved will be available on a first come/first served basis. After 4 p.m. no patron will be allowed to schedule more than one time slot. NO computer time will be scheduled after 7 p.m. weekdays..

Appointments for use of the computers is made in one hour divisions. It is your obligation to show up on time when you make a reservation. If you are more than 10 minutes late (and do not notify us in advance that you will be late) the next person wanting computer time will be given the computer you had reserved and you will have to wait until a computer is available.

No more than one person is allowed to use a computer at any time. However, patrons may work in pairs for school projects or if teaching someone how to use a program. If the patrons working at a computer become too noisy, they will be verbally warned. If they do not adjust their behavior, their computer will be locked down and they will be asked to leave.

Except for the online public access computers (OPAC) which have replaced the card catalogs, all computers are locked down until a patron comes in who has scheduled time on the computers. Once the patron has signed in, one of the computers will be unlocked by the administrator.

Junior High or High School aged patrons, under the age of 18, must have a Parental Consent Form on file to access the internet. All other children must have a parent or legal guardian present to be able to access the internet.

When you sign in at the front desk, you will be given a clipboard with these rules, a slip with your starting and stopping time and a mouse which must be returned to the front desk when you are finished. If the mouse is damaged, in any way, while it is in your possession you will be liable for its replacement or repair.

You must allow time within your hour to print out any papers/reports and you MUST notify the staff BEFORE you print. The cost of printing is .20 cents per sheet; but, if you print anything without informing the staff there will be a .50 cent charge for each sheet of paper used. Any patron who consistently ignores or goes over their allotted time can be denied future computer use or can have their computer time severely limited.

Because computer viruses can be easily spread from machine to machine, the decision has been made that patrons will not be allowed to use their own disks in the computers. If you need to save the work you have done, you can purchase a disk for $1 at the front desk; this disk should only be used with the libraries computers as any saved materials can only be accessed by another Power Macintosh using the same software program and version as that owned by the library. Booted disks and CDs can only be removed from the computer by the administrator.

If you need assistance, pull down the menu under "?" in the upper right hand corner; highlight "Request Attention...;" your message will be sent to the administrator's computer and someone will come to help you. It is not the staff's job to teach patrons how to use the hardware or software. The library staff will assist computer patrons to the best of their abilities; however, they do have other patrons to help and work to do.

While you are using the computer, your work can be observed. This is done so that we can anticipate any problems that may develop. If you are observed doing anything which is illegal, or not considered to be appropriate to local behavioral codes, the administrator can shut down the computer. Before the computer is shut down, a verbal or written message warning will be issued.

Items may only be downloaded with permission from the librarian in charge. Nothing may be uploaded.

Patrons may not receive e-mail or access chat rooms through the library internet workstations.

The library supports U.S. Copyright laws. Users shall respect and abide by all copyright laws as they apply to computer applications.
