Proposed North Judon-San Pierre High School Memorial

The members of the North Judson-San Pierre High School Class of 1970 have established a fund with the Northern Indiana Community Foundation with plans to build a monument to the historic North Judson-San Pierre High School. The NJ-SP High School Memorial Committee hopes to commemorate the NJ-SP High School by constructing a monument on the site of the former high school on Keller Avenue.

The Committee members recognize that NJ-SP High School was and continues to be a cornerstone for thousands of lives. The school itself served as the sight for countless celebrations and milestones for members of the community. The NJ-SP HS Memorial Committee recognizes that teachers, administrators, and staff of the NJ-SP High School helped to make thousands of graduates who they are today. They hope that by building this monument, the history of the historic NJ-SP High School will not fade away with time as former graduates pass away.

Through the generosity of First Farmer’s Bank and Trust, the NJ-SP HS Memorial Committee and the Town of North Judson have acquired a portion of property on the site of the historic school that will be used as the site of the monument. After much thought and discussion, in addition to input from a professional landscape designer, the group has created a design that mimics the front entrance of the original school building.

The group also noted that an unopened time capsule and the cornerstone of the historic building have been preserved and will be incorporated in design of the monument. When the monument is dedicated, the Committee hopes to open the original time capsule. In addition, the committee hopes to install a new time capsule in the memorial to commemorate a new era.

During construction, some original bricks will be used in addition to the new bricks for the project which were generously donated by Norwayne Lumber. The cost of this project is estimated to be approximately $25,000-$30,000. The Committee recently received a grant of $2,000 for the project from the Community Foundation.

The committee and members of the North Judson-San Pierre High School Memorial Fund hope that graduates will take time to review the plan and consider helping to make the proposed monument a reality. This monument will serve as a reminder that the historic NJ-SP High School will forever be in the hearts of its students. If you have questions about the project, please contact Committee Chair Marshall Field at 765-490-0772.
