Contractors or subcontractors doing business in or with the town of North Judson must obtain a permit from the town and be properly insured. That’s the gist of the contractor permit ordinance passed on final reading Monday night by the town board. The new policy does not apply to homeowners who perform their own renovations. However, anyone hired to build, remodel or renovate a structure is subject to the law. The contractor must show proof of public liability and property damage insurance of at least $1 million and have a certificate of insurance made out to the Town of North Judson. Permits are not transferable, and the Town of North Judson does not confirm the actual qualifications of the contractor to do the work. Contractors who do not obtain permits are subject to fines of $500 for a first offense and additional fines and legal action for continued violations.
